With a commitment to saving costs, Swansea City Council investigated the potential for creating its own electricity via the Swansea Environmental Strategy, produced by the Swansea Environmental Forum.

The cost of the installation is reduced by not only the savings from electricity produced and used within the building, but also from the excess power returned to the grid. A highly satisfactory payback of less than six years was estimated, on a conservative basis, for the installation.

The selected solar panels were installed on the pitched roof of the Swansea Guild Hall with roof rails, which were fixed to the existing roof without disrupting the weather protection offered by the ridged roof tiles already on the surface.
